Vinotok
Vinotok is a distinctly Crested Butte event. It is a few days of various events, culminating with the burning of the Grump, which represents all of the local citizens gripes. The bonfire at the end is enormous, and the participants dance around the large conflagration.
Mardi Gras
Crested Butte is a great destination for Mardi Gras! I know, it sounds weird, but we actually get a number of people from New Orleans who come here to escape the crowds in the Big Easy. We have a great parade with costumes, music, floats and, of course, Mardi Gras beads. It's also a great time of year to come skiing.

The Al Johnson race, Crested Butte, CO
The Al Johnson: The Al Johnson race
is a telemark race in honor of Al Johnson, a former postal worker who would ski
the mail from Crested Butte to Marble in the old days, before roads and
telemark equipment as we now know it. This is a great event attracting
serious competitors, and those who are less so (like these Tetris pieces). It makes
for a great viewing event and party atmosphere. This year it took place in mid-March
as the final event during the Telemark Extremes weekend.

The Extremes Competition, Crested Butte, CO
The Extremes Competition - Crested
Butte was the first resort in the U.S. to launch an extreme skiing contest, and
marks twenty odd years of freeskiing competition this season. Competitors
vie for the largest cash purse on the freeskiing circuit and sweet prizes from
all the sponsors. Spectators can watch competitors launch cliffs, do flips -
forward and backwards, and ski extreme lines down extreme terrain. Besides the
alpine extremes, now the resort hosts the snowboard extremes and the telemark
extremes: people doing the same thrilling feats, with a free heel.
The various extreme competitions take place from mid-February through March.

Festival
The Wildflower Festival, Crested Butte, CO
Wildflower Festival:The Crested Butte
Wildflower Festival takes place between July 8-14, 2013. This annual event
showcases the wildflowers in Crested Butte in a plethora of ways. From yoga
classes in the flowery meadows to 4 x 4 Jeep tours to hikes, photography and
cooking classes and more, there is something for everyone. The hearty will
enjoy over 80 different hikes, and the less adventurous will enjoy strolls
through the town of Crested Butte viewing the award winning gardens.
The Crested Butte Wildflower Festival began in 1986 through the efforts of a few insightful Crested Butte locals who envisioned a wildflower celebration in one of the most picturesque valleys in Colorado. The Festival has grown into a week-long celebration with nearly 200 classes offered by over 40 instructors. The Wildflower Festival includes hikes, long and short, photography classes, identification and flower care classes, and even birding and herb events.
Crested Butte is the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, and for very good reason. Our flowers tend to grow bigger and more lush than in other parts of the state, and the Festival usually overlaps peak wildflower season, in early to mid-July, depending on the spring runoff and weather conditions.

Ski Jumping
Big Air on Elk, Crested Butte, CO
Big Air on Elk - Only in Crested Butte do people fly
off a huge kicker to the cheers of hundreds, on the main street in town! It's the annual Big Air on Elk event and it is proving
to be a very popular event for locals and tourists alike. The day before the event, truckloads of snow are brought into the heart of Crested Butte and groomed into a launch and kicker. Snowmobiles tow participants up Elk Avenue, with crowds all around, the competitors then launch themselves off the kicker and are judged on their jumps. Both snowboarders and skiers participate and there are some amazing jumps, and of course crashes. Not one, but at least 2 orthopedic surgeons are on hand in case of injury, and an ambulance crew stands at the ready. Hopefully they aren't needed.
During the event last year, a visitor asked me if we do this every Saturday. No, we try to mix up the events, but it is definitely a great one for competitors, visitors, and orthos alike.
